BSE (mad cow disease)
The first suspected U.S. case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, was announced Dec. 23, 2003, by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman. A Holstein cow tested positive Dec. 9 for BSE when it was presented at a slaughter facility in Washington state. The diagnosis was confirmed on Dec. 25, 2003, by an international reference laboratory in Weybridge, England.
The Iowa Beef Center responded immediately with media interviews, news releases and information for producers. Our response, in addition to other resources for BSE, is listed below. For an overview of BSE, click here.
