DUBUQUE, Iowa – Register now to hear one of the most respected cattle economists in the country share his outlook on beef prices at the 2020 Driftless Region Beef Conference, Jan. 30-31 at the Grand River Conference Center in Dubuque. Dr. Derrell Peel, livestock economist at Oklahoma State University, will wrap up the conference with his predictions of the cattle market for 2020 and beyond.

In addition to Peel, several other nationally known speakers will be featured on the conference agenda. Sara Place, Director of Sustainability for Elanco and formerly Senior Director for Sustainable Beef Production Research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, will discuss how cattle can help protect our environment. Lacey Alexander, animal welfare lead for beef, Cargill Protein North America, will discuss animal welfare and handling in the beef industry.

Wayne Coblentz from the University of Wisconsin will discuss keys to making and managing baleage, and Allison Meyer from the University of Missouri will discuss the role of gestational nutrition on lifetime calf performance.

Breakout sessions on Friday include Galen Erickson, University of Nebraska, on feeding silage; Eldon Cole from Missouri on the value of feeder calves; and Josh McCann from the University of Illinois on mats in deep pit confinement buildings. Iowa State specialists will share a variety of information:

  • Grant Dewell will discuss a feeder calf acclimation project
  • Terry Engelken will share the results of a confined cow study
  • Katy Lippolis will discuss weaning management
  • Lee Schulz will compare costs of raising or purchasing replacement heifers.

The popular evening bull pen session features a panel of practicing veterinarians sharing their experiences and challenges with cattle health.

The Driftless Region Beef Conference is an annual event presented by Iowa State Extension and Outreach, University of Illinois Extension, and University of Wisconsin Extension. It provides an opportunity for producers in the three-state region to hear from university and industry experts from across the country, and gain new insight to profitable and sustainable beef production.
