PERRY, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer an exciting educational opportunity for central Iowa beef cattle producers this February. The program, Boots in the Barn, will be hosted by Dallas County and Boone County Extension. The four-part meeting series has been set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. on February 4, 11, 18 and 25 at the Towncraft Gallery, 1122 Willis Ave., Perry.

ISU extension beef specialist Chris Clark said the program will include some interactive learning and hands-on activities.

“I hope to make it an interesting and interactive program with time for discussion and various interactive learning exercises.," he said. "We plan to round out the program by using the dystocia model to learn about the birthing process and practice delivering calves.”

Series topics will include animal health, nutrition, animal selection, managing the birthing process and more. Curriculum is flexible and can be adapted to meet the interests and needs of participants.

“I have some lessons in mind that we will almost certainly use, including some nutrition, animal health, animal selection, and delivering a calf. Beyond that though, we have flexibility to tailor the program to the interests of the participants,” Clark said.

An evening meal will be served at each meeting and preregistration by Jan. 28 is requested to assist organizers with meal planning. Online registration is available at https://go.iastate.edu/CDPZTY. The registration fee is $50 and includes meals and resource manuals.
